Optimal preparation for the TOEFL exam

Anyone who chooses to study in an English-speaking foreign country soon realises the value of TOEFL. The “Test of English as a Foreign Language” is an internationally recognised certificate exam and TOEFL scores are often used by English-language universities as an admission requirement for foreign students. If you want to pass the test with flying colours, you need to consider carefully how to prepare for TOEFL in advance.

The TOEFL test procedure

The TOEFL exam consists of four sections so as to provide a comprehensive assessment of your language skills:

  • Reading
  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Writing

Your TOEFL preparations must also cover grammar, as this is assessed in all four test sections. Although you can’t fail the tests, universities often stipulate a minimum TOEFL score, although this varies from one university to the next. The TOEFL certificate is valid for two years.

The TOEFL Family of Assessments for different levels of proficiency

Nowadays, the TOEFL exam is usually delivered as an iBT (internet-Based Test) at a test centre; there’s not much demand for the old-style paper-based test these days. The test covers levels B1-C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). You can take the tests for the entire TOEFL Family of Assessments at our locations in Vienna, Pölten and Mödling.

  • TOEFL: the test examines reading and listening skills in the form of multiple choice questions. The other sections of the test cover speaking skills and independent writing.
  • TOEFL Primary Test (A1-B1): the test is aimed at young schoolchildren aged 8+ and assesses reading, listening and speaking skills. The exam can be taken on an individual basis or as a group test at school.
  • TOEFL Junior Test (A2-B2): the test is aimed at schoolchildren aged 11+ and is designed to provide an objective assessment of their English skills. This enables teachers to tailor their lessons to their students’ proficiency levels.
  • TOEFL ITP Test (A2-C1): the Institutional Testing Program (ITP) is a less expensive, pared down version of the full TOEFL test. It evaluates reading and listening comprehension and written expression in the form of a multiple choice test. The test does not include a speaking section.

We make sure that all students who prepare for their TOEFL exam at IQ are familiar with the test conditions and well equipped for all sections of the exam.
